UTR number
Find yourUTR.
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference is the 10-digit number you need to file Self Assessment. Here's where to find it, or how to get one from HMRC.
The basics
Ten digits.Yours for life.
A UTR is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC. It identifies you as a taxpayer for Self Assessment.
It never changes. You only get one, and everyone who files Self Assessment needs one.
Two groups of five digits, like 12345 67890.
This only checks the format. It doesn't confirm the UTR is registered with HMRC.
